IRS refund in Portugal: when it arrives and how to check it
An IRS refund is not a bonus: it is tax you overpaid during the year, given back by the Tax Authority (AT). Here is why it happens, when it must arrive and how to check it.
Why you get a refund
Every month your employer withholds IRS at source. That withholding is an advance based on monthly tables that know nothing about your health, education or rent expenses, a child born mid-year, months without work or a joint return.
The following year your IRS return (Modelo 3) adds up all your income, applies the annual rates and subtracts your tax credits (deduções à coleta). That gives your final tax:
- Withheld > final tax → you get a refund.
- Withheld < final tax → you pay the difference.
Illustrative example
On €1,500 gross a month (single, no dependants, Mainland, 2026) your employer withholds €168.17 on each of 14 payments — €2,354.38 a year. If your final tax after deductions were, say, €2,000, you would get €354.38 back; if it were €2,500, you would pay €145.62. See the IRS deductions guide.
Timeline
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| By end of February | Confirm your household and validate invoices on e-Fatura |
| 16–31 March | Check your deductions; dispute general expenses and VAT |
| 1 April – 30 June | File your return (CIRS art. 60), including IRS Automático |
| By 31 July | AT assesses returns filed on time (art. 77) |
| By 31 August | Deadline to pay tax due and for AT to pay refunds (art. 97) |
31 August is the legal deadline, not the usual date: simple returns filed early often get their refund within a few weeks, but nothing is guaranteed before the deadline. Late returns lose these dates and pay a fine.
What can delay it
- Mismatches between what you declared and what employers or landlords reported.
- Tax debts, which the refund may be used to offset.
- Wrong or missing IBAN — refunds go to the account registered on the Portal das Finanças.
- An amended return, which restarts the assessment.
Interest if the AT is late
If you filed on time and the refund is paid after the legal deadline for reasons attributable to the AT, you are entitled to compensatory interest (juros indemnizatórios, art. 43 of the General Tax Law), counted daily until payment. The AT should pay it on its own initiative; if not, you can claim it via e-balcão.
How to check
- Log in to the Portal das Finanças with your NIF and password (or Chave Móvel Digital).
- Go to IRS → Consultar declaração to see the status of your return.
- Once assessed, the nota de liquidação shows the tax, the amounts withheld and your refund.
- The refunds area shows whether payment has been issued and to which account.
Before filing, the portal shows a simulation; married couples should compare joint and separate filing. If you are on IRS Automático, check the AT's proposal first — see the IRS Automático guide. For monthly withholding, read the net salary guide.
